Patios & paving · Cornwall Patios laid on a full mortar bed.

Porcelain, granite and sandstone patios across Cornwall, from St Austell. Every one is dug out, drained and laid on a full mortar bed: the parts you never see.

The work

How Benn builds a patio.

The same order every time, from the posts where he shows the work.

  1. 01

    Take it back

Old slabs, turf and soil come out. On one new build that meant a foot deep of rocky soil.

  2. 02

    Drainage

New-build gardens often drain badly, so the drainage is planned first: a slot drain along the edge of the patio catches the water and carries it away, with nothing buried under the slabs.

  3. 03

    Sub base

A sufficient sub base, so the patio has something solid to sit on.

  4. 04

    A full mortar bed

Every slab sits on a full bed of mortar, never on dabs. Dabs leave hollow voids, and that is how patios break.

  5. 05

    Slabs and joints

900x600 porcelain is a favourite, finished with grout or a resin jointer. Anti-slip tiles keep it usable when the sun does not show.

Questions

What people ask.

Why does a full mortar bed matter?

A full mortar bed supports the whole slab, so there are no hollow voids underneath for it to break over. On one patio another firm had laid a year earlier, 90% of the slabs broke because of those voids.

Do you lay porcelain or natural stone patios?

Bould lays both porcelain and natural stone patios. Recent jobs have used porcelain in Storm Grey, Marmo Grey and White, Silver and Ash Black granite, and light grey sandstone. Benn can talk you through what suits the garden.

Can you lay slabs I have already bought?

Yes. On one job in 2026 the customer supplied their own White porcelain slabs and did a lot of the prep, and the team laid them.

How long does a patio take?

Every job’s different, so there’s no set time. Benn will give you an idea when he quotes, and quotes are free.
