Groundworks & drainage · Cornwall The groundwork comes first.

New-build gardens that will not drain, banks that eat the garden, bases for hot tubs: the work underneath, done before anything is laid on top.

Questions

What people ask.

My new-build garden floods. Can you fix it?

Yes. New-build gardens with very poor drainage are a job Bould does again and again. The usual fix is to dig out, put in a new drainage system and a proper sub base, then build on top.

Can you take away the soil?

Yes. 56 tons came out of one garden, and 60 tons of rubble and soil out of another.

Can you lay a concrete base for a hot tub?

Yes. For a six-person hot tub in 2026, Bould laid a 7 inch concrete base with reinforced steel mesh and concrete fibres, to reduce shrinkage and cracking.

Do you do drainage on its own, without a patio?

Yes. Whatever the job, Benn always recommends an outlet for any surface water. On a patio, that’s a slot drain along the edge to carry it away.
